Reasons Behind Multiple Births

Multiple births may occur for many reasons which can be naturally or because of the fertility treatments. Women who are pregnant with multiples must be aware of few considerations and complications which may have occur during the pregnancy. There are 2 different multiple pregnancies that can occur such as identical multiples and fraternal multiples. Here are few important reasons that can cause a multiple births.

1. The identical multiples can occur when one egg gets fertilized and divides into 2 or more embryos. Identical multiples will look same and they will be the same sex as they have come from the same egg. The embryo sets will share the single placenta and they will also have separate amniotic sacs in most cases.

2. In fraternal multiples, 2 or more eggs will get fertilized and implanted in the uterus. In this, the multiples can be either same sex or even different sexes which depends on the sperm fertilized the separate eggs. Here embryo will also have a separate placenta and amniotic sac.

3. There are few natural factors that can cause multiple pregnancies includes hereditary disposition toward the multiples, woman who are being 30 or older, a woman’s race and any previous pregnancies.

4. According to few reports, African-American women will be having twins, Asian woman and Native Americans are having very less multiple birth rates. Caucasian women who are over 35 also said to have the highest rate of higher-order multiple births.

5. Fertility treatments are considered to be a major source in increasing the multiple births in the recent years. Most of the women who are delaying their pregnancies are also considered as a factor.

6. The most common signs of a multiple pregnancy are very much similar to a normal pregnancy and there are also few signs apart from the normal ones. There are 4 signs of multiple pregnancy such as rapid weight gain in the first trimester, higher levels of the hormone hCG, a uterus that is larger than expected at prenatal checkups and more severe pregnancy symptoms than normal.

7. The most usual problems with multiple births include preterm delivery, low birth weight, and high blood pressure during pregnancy. In case of multiple births, the first things to do are consult a doctor about prenatal care.
