Important Responsibilities Of A Single Parent

The responsibilities of a single parent are same as any other parents. According to State and federal law, a biological parent has the responsibilities to make the decisions involving their children. Here are few important responsibilities that a single parent is entitled to.

1. The court says the biological has the custody rights to children. But, an unwed father can ask for visitation rights and he also can go to the court to ask for custody rights. The court will look for neglect or abusing factors in granting a change of custody. An unwed parent will have the same rights of a biological parent.

2. The parents will be able to select any name they want, and the child is not needed to share the last name of the father. In case the name becomes a subject of the dispute, it must settle in the court. The right in naming the child will not depend on with whom the child lives with.

3. The child can be claimed by only one parent as he will be dependent for tax purposes. Some of the parents will choose to alternate years for claiming deduction. Most of the parents will agree of the one making most money can claim the deduction.

4. Most of the people will go for DNA tests in determining who fathered a child and most of them will not know that the father can simply sign on an admission of paternity. This will also create a set of rights as well as entitlements. The most important rights include emotional and social contact between a father and the child.

5. In case one of the parents fails to list his name, they can do it after the birth of a child by contacting state Bureau of Vital Statistics in the state. Fathers must sign an affidavit or an admission of paternity to change the name on the birth certificate.

6. Unmarried parents also have right to get the child support from a non-custodial parent and it does not depend on the marital status. Fathers refusing to pay child’s support may get sanctions by the court.

7. Parents will not be penalized or fired by any employer while taking care of a child and a prejudicial treatment of an unwed mother can also result in a civil suit. There will some cases where a sudden schedule changes can be cause by an employer to make the parent in carrying parental duties. This case can become a legal matter in case it becomes apparent that the employer has made the changes to get rid of the employee.
