Menstrual Cycle And Its Different Phases

Menstrual cycle is very common in every woman and occurs due to the changes in hormone levels. This change is a sign that the body is preparing for a fertilized egg to be implanted which causes pregnancy. There are 2 cycles as well as 4 phases in the menstruation and there are some phases that can occur within the same cycle. Here are few stages that occur during a menstrual cycle.

1. The two cycles during the menstruation are known as the ovarian cycle and uterine cycle. The follicular phase, ovulation and luteal phase will happen in the ovarian cycle. The proliferative phase and the secretory phase will occur in the uterine cycle.

2. The first day during the period will start the follicular phase and it can last till the ovulation. The follicular phase has got its name as the egg starts growing and maturing in the small sac which is called as the follicle.

3. Ovulation is the next phase that will be coming around the 14th day of complete menstrual cycle. The ovulation will occur when level of the luteinizing hormone or LH start to surge. The surge usually happens just before ovary starts to releases the egg.

4. After the egg has been released from the ovary it will cause ovulation and the body will enter the luteal phase. The luteal phase will last till the first day of your period and it has been named due to the corpus luteum. A corpus luteum means yellow body in Latin and it is a structure which will grow in a place in the ovary where the mature egg is released when the ovulation occurs. The uterine cycle will also occur during the same time as the ovarian cycle and has its own phase.

5. After the period comes to end and before you ovulate again the phase which you will be going through is known as a proliferative phase. In this phase the lining of uterus will be growing and thickening again and start for the fertilized egg to get implanted causing pregnancy.

6. When the ovulation occurs again, it can last until you start the period. The glands in lining of the uterus will start secreting proteins which is also a preparation for the implantation of a fertilized egg.
