Hypertension occurs when the blood in your body pumps through the narrowed arteries which make the heart to work harder which may lead to heart attack or stroke. There are few prescription medications that can be used for treating hypertension and there is a possibility of adverse side effects. Here are few ways that can be followed for treating hypertension without using any drugs.
1. Eat healthy foods that can be an important way to reduce hypertension without using any prescription drugs. Try to eat lot of fresh fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products and whole-grain carbohydrates.
2. Try to eat items that have lot of potassium which is a mineral that is available in fruits including orange juice and bananas. Foods with lot of potassium can help reducing hypertension.
3. Avoid taking lot of salt which is very important for those who have high-blood pressure. Check the labels that are on the prepared foods to see the amount of sodium. The patients who have hypertension must eat not more than 1,500 mg of sodium a day.
4. You must maintain a healthy weight which is another important nondrug treatment that will help in dealing with high-blood pressure. People with overweight must decrease the hypertension by losing at least five pounds.
5. Exercise is another important t way to reduce the hypertension. At least 30 minutes of physical exercise is a must for those who have hypertension.
6. Stop smoking cigarettes or using any other tobacco products as it can worsen the hardening of the arteries. This can also worsen the hypertension and also increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.
7. Stop drinking alcohol as it can increase the blood pressure. Women who are over the age of 65 must avoid drinking alcohols and men can limit their drink to one drink each day.
8. Try to learn stress management techniques including slow, deep breathing and other methods which can relax your body such as meditation or yoga. Reducing stress is a best way of treating hypertension.
