There are many drugs that available for treating a chronic pain. Some of the medications can be used to relieve the pain quickly and some of them take more time to build up a therapeutic level before reducing the pain.

1. Acetaminophen is available at over the counter which can relieve pain. There are few stronger medications that are available which can cause side effects, so the doctor may prescribe acetaminophen to start the treatment. It is safer when taken as directed by the doctor and avoiding the side effects which are very small compared to other medications.

2. Ibuprofen is known to be an anti-inflammatory drug which helps to relieve pain as well as reduce swelling. It is also an over the counter analgesic which has lower dose and also sold by prescription with a higher dosage. The doctors may prescribe Ibuprofen with other pain medications and it will also work within an hour of taking it.

3. Capsaicin is a natural occurring substance that is available in chili peppers and it is used to make topical analgesic creams. It also helps the pain problems in the skin and provides deep heat on the area that is experiencing pain. It is an over the counter and one of the most effective one to moderate pain.

4. There are few antidepressants that can be used for treating a chronic pain such as Amitriptyline which is a prescription oral medication that is prescribe by the doctors to reduce pain relieving qualities. Amitriptyline is known to be effective treat low moderate chronic pain for few conditions, but it may take some time to develop therapeutic level. Amitriptyline is also used to treat certain chronic pain including lower back pain and temporomandibular joint disorder.

5. Corticosteroids including prednisone have been prescribed as an anti-inflammatory medication which is also used to relieve inflammation and pain. It can be taken orally or injected in the area which causes pain. Corticosteroids can be used only for a short period of time to reduce pain as it includes vast side effects.

6. Opioid analgesics have been used for treating moderate to severe pain including morphine, oxycodone, hydrocodone along with acetaminophen and acetaminophen along with codeine. All these drugs are taken in combination with other pain medications and it also has a high incidence of abuse as well as addiction.
