Process Of Dilation and Curettage Abortion

Dilation and curettage abortion is a surgical procedure and it is also known as D & C where the cervix in dilated. This type of abortion can be done between 6 to 12 weeks from the 1st day of your last mensural cycle . It is usually done in hospital and it requires general anesthesia. Before you go for this you can also do a self dilation check.

By giving general anesthesia ( which contains misoprostol and oxytocin, it is helpful for the cervix dilation and for contraction of your uterus) doctor will insert a speculum into your vagina and clamp it for plain view of your cervix. To prevent the infection  doctor will swab your vagina with an antiseptic. To grasp your cervix and for holding it , a tencaculum will be used.

Dilation involves opening of cervix, and insertion of an instrument like a slender rod ( laminaria ) which gradually causes vagina to be widen. You will face a mild to strong cramping in the dialation procedure.  By measuring the actual size of your uterus he or she takes correct sized curette(Long steel rod which contains loop at the tip). Then he or she insert a curette which is a metal like instrument. And it is used to sceape away the lining of your uterus. Doctor starts to press the curette along the surface of the uterus to remove the sac which contains the baby. It will be dislodged into pieces and it may be colleted in a bowl. This process may take 10min after inserting the curette into your uterus. Once the procedure is over, the cramping and pain will slow down. Once the docter is sure that every thing is removed, he or she will remove the curette from your uterus and cervix  and then the tenaculum and speculum.

You can expect to wait for an hour, once the abortion has been completed. To prevent the infection, acetaminophen or ibuprofen will be given by the doctor. The side effects of the abortion may be normal and common which consist on cramping, nausea, pain, sweating etc. Spotting or bleeding can continue for upto 2 weeks after the procedure and there is nothing to panic.
