A Spontaneous Abortion is also known as miscarriage which is a loss of pregnancy in the first twenty weeks of the gestation. About 20% of the pregnancies end with miscarriage and few face spontaneous abortion before they realize that they are pregnant.

1. When the umbilical cord is twisted which reduces the blood supply to fetus may cause a miscarriage. Genetic abnormalities and bad attachment to the uterine wall also can cause spontaneous abortion.

2. A spontaneous abortion may occur if the women are older and uses too much caffeine, smokes, consumes alcohol or drugs. There are also other things which can cause spontaneous abortion such as chronic diseases, previous miscarriages, abdomen trauma, vitamin deficiency, etc.

3. An ultrasound will help to decide on the pregnancy state and also find out fetal heartbeat or may be ectopic pregnancy. Blood must be drawn for few days to check the HCG levels.

4. There are various signs of spontaneous abortion like bleeding, pelvic pain, dilated cervix or passing of the vaginal tissue. During a spontaneous abortion if a mother gets infected, the signs may be chills, body aches and fever.
